Will the Nintendo 3DS display DS and DSi games in 3D?

I'm getting conflicting information. I know the 3DS is backwards compatible, but I'm not getting a straight answer on the 3D capabilities of DS games. The best answer I've found is:

"Standard DS games will not have the ability to be displayed in stereoscopic 3D on the 3DS. DS games will likely only be displayed in standard 2D."

Will not <-> likely only.

In two sentences we get two different answers.

So, do we have a straight answer? On the one hand, I can't imagine spending $250 for the console until I actually have a need for it... while on the other hand, I can completely imagine Nintendo tokenly supporting backwards compatibility. The games work, but work on their own circuits so there's no "upgrade."

That's some interesting information you've picked up.
Straight Answer: -- Most Likely --
The Nintendo 3DS will in fact work fine with DS series games, though official facts about 3-D compatibility are most likely under wraps right now, as the Nintendo company has no been allowing too much information to be revealed to the public. I'd think it's fairly likely, considering this is an automated feature (3-D Adjust Slider) and not an automatic one. As for efficiency, it's like trying to add 3-D effects to a 2-D movie that was never meant for it. 3-D games are designed to be 3-D, so they are compatible and work terrifically well with the 3-D slider, while 2-D games which were never designed for 3-D, may appear funny and incompatible.

This is what we virtually know, officially at present, about the Nintendo 3DS:
"The Nintendo 3DS features push-buttons, D-pad, analog stick, touchscreen, volume slider, 3D depth slider, wireless communications switch, 3DS/DSi/DS and SD Card Slots, and a variety of programs, including Wii-based features, such as 3DS Sound , Mii Studio, PictoChat, Street Pass Mii Plaza, Face Shooting, Download Service, 3DS Camera, Augmented reality games, 3DS Shop, Internet Browser, an Activity Log, and 3D movie playback capability (with movies by Warner Bros, Disney, and DreamWorks). As it’s main attraction, the Nintendo 3DS enables 3-D game play for select games, including a slider to adjust the 3-D graphics at any time. The dramatic effects of 3-D gameplay requires no special glasses or additional equipment as it operates on the concept of autostereoscopy."
