Virtual Reality Goggles – Digital Video Eyewear

This movie was either from the 80s or the 90s. People in the movie were wearing some sort of spiny looking device on their heads that allowed them to experience virtual reality. Something like a very advanced 3D cinema with feeling. These devices were banned by law because they caused addiction and were related with something bad. The devices covered mostly the top of the head and resembled a spine with extensions. I think they called it a "spider". It was quite weird now that I think of it.

I don't remember the main plot of the movie. I can only remember that the main character was a guy who had lost his wife somehow. In one scene he was experiencing recorded moments with his wife through that device.
Has anyone else seen this old bizarre sci-fi movie?
