It really depends on who is playing them. Some people might use them to waste time, or to relieve stress, or to take out anger, or just to entertain the same way movies, tv and books do.
Whereas some people might find inspiration from certain games. Whether that is good inspiration (inventions, ideologies, concepts, anything good) or bad inspiration (the many massacres and murders and cases of violence attributed to video games).
They give people jobs and income, they circulate money throughout the economy.
They can hone peoples reflexes, multitasking, logical thinking, lateral thinking, problem solving, and many more things.
The video game industry has provided leaps and bounds in the fields of animation and computer generated images.
The best of games provide the graphics of a movie, the story and characters of a novel, and they provide interactivity and more length than a movie.
